Position Overview/Responsibilities for the Technical Writer:Apply existing content into standardized Microsoft Word templates
Edit job aids for clarity, consistency, and plain language
Conduct accessibility checks (e.g., heading hierarchy, alt text, contrast, screen reader compatibility)
Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to revise and clarify content
Finalize and prepare documents for SharePoint publishing
Track document progress and report status updates
This is a contract position focused on updating and standardizing approximately 300 internal job aids for a county-wide initiative.
Required Skills for Technical Writer:Strong technical writing and editing skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and document formatting
Familiarity with accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG 2.1)
Experience using Adobe Acrobat Pro for PDF accessibility validation (Accessibility Checker, Tags panel, Reading Order tools)
High attention to detail and adherence to templates and content guidelines
Basic experience with screen readers or assistive technology
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Experience editing instructional or technical content (e.g., job aids, user guides, SOPs)
Knowledge of plain language best practices
Experience working with cross-functional teams or SMEs
Familiarity with SharePoint or document publishing workflows
Experience with CommonLook or other advanced PDF accessibility tools
Understanding of PDF tagging and remediation workflows
Interest in training, adult learning, or IT education environments
